This is a decorative shrub with sparse branches that grows up to 3 meters. The light green leaves are large and lobed , the flowers small but bright red or pink and appearing in considerable members on red stems. Another species, Jatropha podagrica, is smaller plant , about 60 cm. high, with a knobby, swollen stem and red flowers in large terminal clusters. Both make good potted plants but can also be used in small garden as border plants. Partial sun and well- drained soil are preferred. Propagation is by seeds, which are produced freely and germinate easily, or by cuttings.
